EDM Broken Tap and Bolt Removal

Precision EDM removal for broken taps, bolts, drills, and obstructions. No thread damage, no bore distortion. Garland, TX, shipping to all 48 states.

How EDM tap and bolt removal works

EDM removes broken taps and bolts by eroding the stuck piece at a microscopic level. A shaped electrode targets the broken tool while the workpiece sits submerged in dielectric fluid. The electrical discharge vaporizes the obstruction layer by layer without ever contacting the surrounding material.

The process is non-contact, so the original threads and bore finish stay intact. The electrode removes only the broken piece, and because there is no cutting force or mechanical stress on the surrounding material, the hole is ready for a new tap to chase the existing threads.

EDM tap and bolt removal works on any conductive material: hardened tool steel, carbide, stainless steel, Inconel, titanium. The material can be fully hardened. No annealing or heat treatment reversal is required. The process handles blind holes and through holes.

When to use EDM instead of manual extraction

Manual methods have a place, but they carry real risk. Screw extractors can snap inside the hole, leaving you with two problems instead of one. Drilling risks going off-center, widening the bore, or destroying threads beyond repair. Left-hand drill bits only work if the fastener is loose enough to back out, and if it broke in the first place, it probably isn’t.

EDM is the right method when the material is too hard for conventional extraction tools. If the tap or bolt broke because the workpiece is hardened steel or carbide, the same hardness that caused the break makes manual removal nearly impossible. EDM doesn’t care about material hardness. It erodes any conductive material at the same controlled rate.

If the part is too valuable to risk further damage, EDM is the safe option. Same if the fastener sits in a blind hole with no room to drill. And if a previous extraction attempt already failed and left a broken extractor jammed inside the original hole, EDM can remove that too.

Taps, bolts, drills, and other obstructions we extract

  • Broken taps of all sizes and thread types
  • Broken bolts and studs
  • Broken drills and reamers
  • Broken EZ-outs and screw extractors
  • Other metallic obstructions stuck in workpieces

We work on tool steel, stainless steel, carbide, Inconel, titanium, aluminum, brass, and copper. If the material conducts electricity, we can remove the obstruction from it. Our Services

40 years of precision EDM in Garland, TX

EDM of Garland has been running wire EDM and sinker EDM since 1984. We operate full-size Charmilles machines, not portable tap burners. A dedicated EDM shop has tighter control over the process and can handle larger, more complex workpieces than portable equipment can.

Nolan Jackson, the owner, runs the machines himself. When you call, you’re talking to the person who will do the work.

We serve manufacturers and machine shops across the DFW metroplex and the industries that depend on precision machining. We also ship to all 48 contiguous states via FedEx, with next-day delivery available. Whether you’re in Richardson or shipping a part from Houston, we get the broken tool out and your part back to you.

    • Photos of the stuck tool and workpiece
    • Material type (if known)
    • Thread size and whether the hole is blind or through
    • Any previous extraction attempts and what happened

The more detail you send, the faster we can quote it.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How much does EDM tap or bolt removal cost?

Cost depends on the size of the broken tool, the workpiece material, and whether the hole is blind or through. A small broken tap in a standard steel block costs less than a large bolt in a hardened aerospace component. Call (972) 271-9028 with your part details and we will quote it the same day.

What size taps and bolts can you remove?

We remove broken taps and bolts from small thread sizes up through large-diameter studs. Our Charmilles machines and CURRENT EDM fast hole drill handle the range. Send your part dimensions and thread size and we will confirm whether we can take the job.
