Struggling With Precision Cavity Work?

If you’re sourcing sinker EDM services in Dallas, you’ve probably run into these frustrations:
  • Most local shops only do wire EDM and keep referring you elsewhere for cavity work
  • Your mold cores require blind features that conventional machining can’t touch
  • Heat-treated tool steels are destroying your cutters and blowing your timelines
  • Electrode outsourcing adds weeks and quality uncertainty to your projects
  • You need sharp internal corners not the radiused compromises wire EDM forces
  • Secondary operations on finished parts risk scrapping expensive pre-machined components
Here’s the good news: EDM of Garland has dedicated sinker EDM equipment, in-house electrode production, and 40+ years solving exactly these problems for DFW manufacturers.

What is Sinker EDM?

Sinker EDM (also called Ram EDM or Plunge EDM) uses a custom-shaped electrode to erode cavities and 3D features into conductive materials through controlled electrical sparks. The process happens in dielectric oil with zero mechanical stress, allowing you to machine hardened materials and finished parts without risk of distortion. Key difference from wire EDM: Sinker creates features that stop inside the part. Wire EDM cuts completely through. The geometry determines which process you need.

What Sinker EDM Makes Possible

Machine Hardened Materials After Heat Treatment Stop scheduling EDM before hardening. We burn cavities, ribs, and internal details into H-13, D-2, S-7, and tungsten carbide at full hardness. No annealing required, no re-hardening delays. Create Features Conventional Machining Can’t Sharp internal corners down to near-zero radius. Deep ribs with aspect ratios that break end mills. Blind keyways and splines without through-features. Complex cooling channels in injection mold cores. Add Features to Finished Parts Without Risk Burn blind keyways, internal splines, or relief pockets into expensive pre-machined components. Zero mechanical stress means no distortion and no scrap risk on parts with $10,000+ of prior machining invested.

Our Sinker EDM Capabilities

Mold and Die Work

Injection mold cores, cavity inserts, stamping dies, and precision tooling in hardened tool steels. Complex rib structures, cooling channels, textured surfaces, and features that define final molded part quality.

Secondary Operations

Blind keyways, internal splines, relief pockets, and detail features added to existing components. We work on finished parts without introducing mechanical stress that causes distortion or scrap.

Hard and Exotic Materials

Tungsten carbide die inserts. Inconel and Hastelloy for oil and gas. Titanium for aerospace tooling. We specialize in materials that punish conventional machining.

Materials We Machine

Any electrically conductive material: Aluminum, Brass, Copper, Hastelloy, Inconel, Molybdenum, Stainless Steels, Titanium, Tool Steels (A2, D2, H13, M2, O1, S7), Tungsten Carbide.

Is Sinker EDM Right for Your Project?

Choose Sinker EDM When You Need:
  • Blind cavities, pockets, or features that don’t cut through the part
  • Mold cores and cavity inserts in hardened tool steel
  • Sharp internal corners (near-zero radius vs. wire EDM’s 0.006″+ minimum)
  • 3D contoured surfaces and complex geometries
  • Secondary operations on finished, expensive components
Choose Wire EDM When You Need:
  • Through-cuts and profiles that go completely through material
  • Punches, dies, and flat profiles
  • One-off prototype work (no electrode investment)

    Why EDM of Garland?

    Dedicated Sinker Capability in DFW

Most local EDM shops only offer wire. We’re one of the few in Dallas-Fort Worth with dedicated sinker machines for the cavity work, mold cores, and blind features that wire EDM can’t produce.

    Electrodes Made In-House

We machine our own graphite and copper electrodes. No outsourcing delays, no quality uncertainty, no finger-pointing. Faster turnaround and better accuracy on your parts.

    40+ Years in Garland

Founded in 1984. Family-owned. Serving DFW tool & die makers, aerospace manufacturers, and oil & gas suppliers for over four decades. We’re not going anywhere.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is sinker EDM used for?

Sinker EDM creates blind cavities, 3D features, and complex shapes in hardened materials. Common applications include injection mold cores, stamping die cavities, blind keyways, and secondary operations on finished parts.

What’s the difference between sinker EDM and wire EDM?

Sinker plunges a shaped electrode into material to create cavities. Wire cuts completely through like a scroll saw. Choose sinker for blind holes and internal features; choose wire for through-cuts and profiles.

What surface finish can sinker EDM achieve?

We produce finishes from 32 Ra µin down to 8 Ra µin depending on requirements. Many customers use our EDM finish directly without secondary polishing.

How are sinker EDM electrodes made?

We machine electrodes in-house from graphite or copper. Graphite works well for most tool steels; copper produces finer finishes on carbide. Electrode cost is factored into job pricing.

Can sinker EDM create sharp internal corners?

Yes. Sinker creates near-zero radius internal corners with properly shaped electrodes. Wire EDM minimum radius is typically 0.006″ to 0.008″ with standard wire.

What files do you need to quote a job?

We accept STEP, IGES, DXF, DWG, and PDF files. We can also work from physical parts. For accurate quotes, we need geometry, material, tolerances, surface finish, and quantity.
